Blue Canyon Country Club (Canyon Course)

Blue Canyon Country Club sits in a large valley in Phuket's Thalang district, developed in 720 acres with the Andaman Sea and Phang Nga mountains as a backdrop. The club opened in 1991 and has two 18-hole courses — the Canyon Course and the Lakes Course — both designed by Japanese golf course architect Yoshikazu Kato. The Canyon Course was carved in 1988–91 from an abandoned tin mine and rubber plantations, shaped around the site's natural canyons with minimal disruption to the surrounding landscape. The course is one of Asia's most storied championship venues, having hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic, the Honda Invitational, the Thailand Open, and the Blue Canyon Phuket Championship, and it's the only course to have hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic three times (1994, 1998, 2007). Its most famous moment came in the 1998 Johnnie Walker Classic, when Tiger Woods defeated Ernie Els in a playoff after erasing an eight-stroke final-round deficit. The signature stretch runs from the back nine, where the 13th ("Canyon Hole," Par 4) — a tee shot across a wide canyon where picking the right line matters — is the standout, made famous by Tiger Woods, who once drove the green. Other highlights include the 7th (Par 3), which demands an accurate 170+ yard tee shot over a ravine to a sloping green guarded by bunkers front and back; the 9th (Par 5), a tough closer that rewards a strong drive with a chance to go for the green, though most players lay up short of the water; the 14th (Par 3), which drops about 40 feet in elevation from tee to an island green, often requiring one or two clubs less than normal; and the 17th (Par 3), which Fred Couples called "one of the best par 3s in golf" — over 200 yards with a canyon running along the right side down to a sloping, hidden green. The 11th–14th stretch is considered the toughest run on the back nine, capable of wrecking a scorecard. On facilities, the club offers a professional golf shop with major equipment brands and rental gear, plus an open-veranda restaurant overlooking the fairways and lakes. The Canyon Course has undergone a full 18-hole renovation, including new grasses suited to Phuket's climate and some design upgrades — worth noting since older reviews had flagged inconsistent course conditioning in the past.
